Bilbao is a fascinating destination in Spain.
I adore it for its unique language
The Basque language is known as Euskara and it has no other modern day relatives. When I was teaching in Spain, I often found the names of Basque students to be especially beautiful. Names like Ainhoa, Aitor, and ones with an ‘x’ placed somewhere in the middle of the name that is pronounced like “cha.”
The Basque region is also known for its famous foodie culture. I took restaurant recommendations from a friend and fellow teacher who was from the region. Then, I waited for a time of year where I could hopefully avoid the region’s notorious rain, which I amazingly succeeded in doing!
Here’s a list of things to do in Bilbao:
- Go pintxos hopping
- Tapas are famous around Spain. But in Bilbao, pintxos reign supreme. They may often be served on toothpicks, skewers, or small cuts of bread.
- Visit the Guggenheim Museum of Bilbao
- It’s stunning right from the moment you take in its exterior. It’s also where I took the above spider photo.
- Swing by Mirador De Artxanda
- View the city from up above!
- Walk around Plaza Moyua
- Great for people watching, potentially flower watching, and taking in decorations depending on the season.
