While some places are known for being college towns, I like to think of Rhode Island as a college state. Although it is the smallest state in the United States, it is home to many institutions of higher education. Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), a world-renowned arts institution, Brown University, an Ivy League Institution, and Johnson & Wales University, known for its Culinary Arts program and Business and Hospitality schools all make a home in Providence, Rhode Island. There are also has three state-funded schools: The University of Rhode Island (URI), Rhode Island College (RIC), and the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI). The last institutions are private and include Providence College, Roger Williams University, and Bryant University. For those who are considering attending any college in Rhode Island, there will be plenty to enjoy.
1.Getting A Degree: Just the experience of college itself will be a challenging and exciting time. It’s a chance to pursue any number of passions while attending college in Rhode Island.
2. The Great Outdoors: Rhode Island is known as ‘The Ocean State’ for a reason. There are over 3 dozen beaches to visit and tons of other parks and outdoor activities to take part in when seeking a break from campus life.
3. Good Eats: These days, Rhode Island’s status as a haven for foodies is coming forth. When you want to eat somewhere other than the dining hall, you can munch on a few local favorites such as fresh seafood, Del’s Lemonade, and Iggy’s Doughboy and Chowder House. There are also options like Italian, Portuguese, Cape Verdean, Ethiopian, and Indian cuisine – – just to name a few!
4. It’s Cute!: With its adorable Victorian-style homes, beach houses, lighthouses and mansions, there is lot that can strike your eye in Rhode Island communities. WaterFire also brings small crowds of people ready to take in the event. Don’t be surprised if a late night stroll beyond campus leaves you convinced that you’re walking around a movie set.
5. Inevitable Nostalgia: College is a pivotal time in life. If you spend those years in Rhode Island, the state will now sew pieces into the fabric of your memories. You won’t drive past the state while on I-95 or stroll through Rhode Island streets without seeing spots that hold stories of firsts, lasts, and bests.
Bonus: Rhode Island has its fair share of quirky facts, including that its state bird is the red chicken and that it was the only state to not ratify the 18th amendment of prohibition! These things, should you choose to attend college in Rhode Island, may be even more reason to embrace your time at one of its institutions of higher education.
