Planning A Capsule Wardrobe for Travelers, Backpackers, and Digital Nomads | Indyx

Have you ever fretted over what outfits to pack for a trip? Toyed around with the idea of building a capsule wardrobe? Me too!

I went scrolling in the app store looking for a capsule wardrobe application that would help me visualize my wardrobe. I didn’t do too much research, choosing instead to gravitate towards whichever application had strong reviews and an intriguing interface (fashion is mostly visual after all). Unlike when I waffled back and forth between using Tandem or using HelloTalk to find Japanese and Spanish language exchange partners, I’ve remained loyal to Indyx for over a year.

Is It Free?

When you start Indyx, you automatically get access to a trial of the premium version. Don’t worry, you don’t have to enter any payment information. I’ve never paid for the premium version and thankfully, the functions I most need are free!

How Does It Function?

You simply lay a clothing item down on a flat surface and snap a pic. The app does an excellent job of cropping out the background surrounding the clothing item. Then you can add in details like brand, size, colors in the item, and so on. I suppose the size is because there is also a marketplace on Indyx where you can sell your clothing items. I’ve never used it, but apparently they don’t charge any commission on sales and you get to keep the profits!

Pictures you take of individual clothing pieces get stored in the Items section. You can then build Outfits. As you can see below, I also hacked the Outfits portion to my benefit. I wanted to be able to visualize all of the tops, bottoms, and exercise clothing that I owned. I use the Collections category whenever I’m packing for a specific, shorter-term trip, like when I went to Hawaii and Malaga.

Another function that I’m stoked is free is the Board function. This is essentially a calendar board where you can drop in the outfits you wore on specific days. I use this for a few reasons:

  1. To lessen outfit repeating 😉
  2. To see if there are clothing items I’m not wearing.

If I find that there are items that I’m not wearing often, I have to consider giving them away. I travel full-time and have to reflect on whether it’s worth carrying multiple items around the world and paying to check a suitcase just so something can live in various apartment closets and never on my body! As I type this, there are a few beloved items that I need to wear or face the music. My beloved blue heels saw their last days in Malaga. They were gorgeous and decently comfortable, but I wore them once in the course of a month, and that was only because I forced myself to wear then on a girls’ night out.

The calendar doesn’t allow you to see when I wore more than one outfit on a day other than using squares in the bottom right-hand corner to indicate this. Basically, I like knowing what I’ve recently worn to the gym as well as out and about.

I regret tying shoes to different outfits when I built out my Indyx outfits because the shoes I wear change depending on the occasion. I also realize that save for my black trail running sneakers, I do not have the proper foot gear. It’s something I’ll have to figure out in time.

Now THIS is a function I wish stayed free. It’s great seeing what colors make up my wardrobe. (This screenshot is old and my distribution would look different today)

I’ve certainly toyed with the idea of further condensing my wardrobe so that I fly with only a carry-on roller bag and a backpack, ditching my checked suitcase. This is an issue that is widely debated between nomads on Reddit. For now, fashion enriches my life too much and I stay in each location for too many months to fret about checking a suitcase just yet.

An app like Indyx really shows you how multiplication of items really maximizes the amount of outfits you can wear overall. I daydream about having an all black wardrobe and never spending too much time thinking about what I’ll wear, but the floral prints and bright colors in my wardrobe still bring me so much joy 🙂

So that’s my review! Let me know if you check out Indyx or if there are any other free capsule wardrobes that you’ve recommend?

Happy travels ❤
