I am a New York City native. So, in classic fashion, I had never even been to the Statue of Liberty! I can remember a teacher in middle school who was passionate about organizing a trip there, but it never happened. The more I traveled and met people from around the world who had great travel stories about visiting the US, the more it inspired me to see more of my birth country.

My favorite part was an interactive exhibit where you could select a country and then see where natives of that country were represented across the United States. Since my family is Jamaican, I naturally looked to see where other Jamaicans had settled. It was no surprise to see us represented heavily in cities like Miami and Brooklyn, where I’m from. I was most shocked to see that a cluster of Jamaicans lived out in Alaska! I made sure to tell my mother to gauge her surprise as well.

If you are also a NYC-native or have spent a lot of time there but never visited the Statue of Liberty, perhaps this might inspire you to give it a try 🙂
