Marrakech, Morocco

Photo taken at a market.

Flights from Madrid to Marrakech, Morocco were short and cheap. I wasn’t sure when the next time I would get an opportunity to visit would be, so I went ahead and booked a ticket even though I could only go for a short 3-day long weekend trip. Here were some highlights:

Design

I loved the Islamic architecture, from doors, to windows, to floor tiles.

Jardin Majorelle

If you look up top things to do in Marrakech, Jardin Majorelle is sure to pop up! It is known for being owned by Yves-Saint-Laurent and designed by Jean Majorelle, a French artist. I found walking around the gardens beautiful and my friend and I stopped at a nearby cafe beforehand that was also pleasant. Final verdict: “Worth it.”

I felt like this photo gave aunty-energy, but I love it 😀

Animals

We saw so many cats, including ones that made their way to the cool interior of our lodging to ones that jumped up on displays while we visited museums!

We saw these birds going about their day as we sat across the street at a restaurant.

Side Note: A Dilemma

I travel solo the vast majority of the time, and I assumed Morocco would be no different. If you have ever searched for information on solo female travel, you know that horror stories aren’t too many clicks away, but that most places will say to practice common the precautions you generally carry out as a woman. However, for this specific trip I happened upon too many similar, unfortunate stories that female solo travelers survived. It was the first time I felt genuinely worried about traveling solo. Thankfully, a fellow teacher in Madrid (and dear friend to this day), agreed to go with me! I do not know how I would have felt alone. I can say that traveling as a duo, the people we encountered with were so kind and generous. Whenever you travel, you determine how you would like to go about it. Even the most independent of us sometimes need support; likewise even the most social sometimes desire alone time. Do what is right for you.
